Pastor’s Column May 30, 2010

Greetings,

I would like to share with you one of my favorite hymns about the Holy Trinity. Please read it carefully and find out how its melody plays. It is quite beautiful and appropriate given that we celebrate Trinity Sunday this weekend.

Sing praise to our Creator,
O sons of Adam’s race;
God’s children by adoption,
Baptized into his grace.

Refrain

Praise the holy Trinity,
Undivided Unity,
Holy God, Mighty God,
God Immortal, be adored.

To Jesus Christ give glory,
God’s coeternal Son;
As members of his Body
We live in him as one.

Refrain

Now praise the Holy Spirit
Poured forth upon the earth;
Who sanctifies and guides us,
Confirmed in our rebirth.

Refrain

The music comes from Mainz Melody and the text came in 1961 from Omer Westendorf . It is one of my favorites and at times, lifts me into heaven. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Peace, Fr. Tom

Pastor’s Column May 23, 2010

Greetings,

Pentecost is the birthday of the Church! Today we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit in tongues of fire over and into the hearts of the apostles. Before this event in the life of the church happened, the apostles were still reeling from Jesus’ death on the Cross. They were still fearful, insecure, afraid, perhaps even wounded from the sins of denial and abandonment in the hour of the Master’s greatest need during the Passion (remember that it got pretty ugly with Judas betraying Jesus). But as Jesus had promised, the Advocate, the Holy Spirit now was to come over and fill the apostles with deep healing, strength, courage, with zeal for the mission that was ahead of them. They all came to know the deepest trust and confidence in the Lord’s power to use them as instruments in bringing about the conversion of humanity through the spreading of the Gospel message. Broken sinful humanity (Jesus’ friends, the apostles and disciples) abandoned their God in His greatest moment of need, but now are restored in the image and likeness of God being able to fulfill their mission in going out into the world. And through suffering, hardship, and persecution remain faithful even unto death (martyrdom) for the sake of this message of eternal life through the forgiveness of sins to be spread to all of the nations.
We are modern day apostles and disciples called now in this time to do the same. Pentecost continues to be celebrated and brought forth for all of us to imitate, through this infinite power unleashed by our deep humility. We must learn more and more on how to be open to the subtle movements of the Holy Spirit, learning docility and conforming our desires to that of God’s. The more we get this conversion process right, the more we become the children of God we were created to be. The deeper our union with God will become a reality and the more we will live in anticipation of eternal happiness.

Peace, Fr. Tom
